Discovering the depths of the sea..
SPARK
Her surface, the surface of the sea, I had photographed for months .. but below it she keeps a darkness the eye cannot enter. Too deep, too black for any light to return.
So I stopped looking, and listened.
To know the deep, sailors send a sound down into the water and wait for what comes back. Not an image .. an echo. The dark that answers. Sonar*, they call it .. and the ear is already hidden in the title of this work.
We are not so different. What lies deepest in us is never seen either .. only sensed, by what comes back when something reaches in.
*Sonar .. SOund Navigation And Ranging .. to find, in total darkness, by sound: a pulse sent out, the echo read for what cannot be seen.
